1966-1968 The Bishop Whealon Period

With the resignation of Archbishop Gannon, John Francis Whealon (1966-1968) was named the sixth bishop of Erie on December 14, 1966. He was an Ohio native who was ordained an auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland by Archbishop Egidio Vagnozzi, the Apostolic Delegate, at St. John Cathedral on July 6, 1961. He was Bishop of Erie for less than two years when he was appointed the Archbishop of Hartford in December, 1968. Meanwhile, on September 6, 1968 Archbishop Gannon passed quietly into eternity. The entire community mourned his passing at the age of ninety-one.
