Good Shepherd Collection for Erie Diocesan Retired Priests
The annual Good Shepherd Collection will be taken up in all parishes in the Diocese of Erie on Good Shepherd Sunday, May 6-7. Clergy are asked to read the attached letter from Bishop Lawrence Persico. A promotion kit prepared by Msgr. Daniel Magraw, director of the Good Shepherd Collection, is now available at http://www.ErieRCD.org/goodshepherd.htm. The kit is designed to help pastors and their office staff effectively promote the collection for parish bulletins April 22-23, April 29-30 and May 6-7.

Parishes that have used the information along with personal promotion by their parish priests have been very successful with their collection. Our retired priests are grateful for your help with this annual campaign. Parishes are asked to remit Good Shepherd funds to the diocesan Finance Office within a few weeks. Any further contributions received should be sent to the Finance Office no later than June 30.

Bill in Congress to provide relief to Christians in the Middle East
On Jan. 10, 2017, a bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ) for the express purpose of providing emergency relief to Christians and other victims of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in Iraq and Syria, as well as requiring accountability for the perpetrators of such crimes. House Resolution 390, known as the Iraq and Syria Genocide Emergency Relief and Accountability Act, is now awaiting a vote in the House after the Easter recess.

The plight of Christians and other ethnic and religious minorities facing genocide in the Middle East is an issue that transcends political parties. Bishop Lawrence Persico urges the faithful to be informed about the situation of their Christian brothers and sisters in Iraq and Syria, to pray and sacrifice for them, and to work with their senators and representatives to support HR 390.

Attached please find a prayer for the people of Syria, as well as an Action Alert prepared by the Parish Social Ministry & Respect Life Office. Please note, there will be a holy hour for vocations at St. Peter Cathedral to mark the day. (See below.)
