The Diocese of Erie Information Bulletin advertises and promotes activities and events sponsored by diocesan organizations such as parishes, schools, religious communities and groups.

Parishioners, employees encouraged to be cautious about sharing personal information
Parishioners at an Erie parish recently received an email from a scam artist claiming to be their pastor, requesting financial help. Please include the following notice on your parish website, occasionally in your weekly bulletin, and forward it to your employees to keep everyone safe from fraud:

  In this age when personal data can be misused by scam artists, please be aware that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie, clergy, and entities such as parishes and schools will never solicit your personal or business information by any method unless initiated by you. Should you receive an unsolicited request for such information, exercise extreme caution. Contact the person or entity by using official contact information. Do not respond using contact information in the potential fraudulent request.

Lenten regulations and Easter Vigil time
Please review the attached letter from the Chancery regarding Lenten regulations and guidelines for the Triduum in the Diocese of Erie. 

Vocation dinner opportunities
St. Andrew Dinners for young men striving to follow Jesus’ call in their lives and to be open to the possibility of the seminary and priesthood will be offered at the following dates and locations:

  • Feb. 8, St. George, Erie
  • Feb. 11, St. Eulalia, Coudersport
  • March 8, St. Peter Cathedral, Erie.

Those interested do not need to belong to these parishes to attend. Parishes in the vicinity of these dinners are asked to use the attached fliers to promote attendance and publicize the schedule. Suggestions on the flu and Liturgy
All are asked to take note of the information and suggestions on flu and the Liturgy in the attached document. Please share the document with all liturgical ministers. For questions or concerns, contact the Office of Worship at 814-824-1270.

Mark your calendar for 24 Hours for the Lord
24 Hours for the Lord will be held again this year at St. Peter Cathedral, Erie. The 24 hours of adoration and confession will begin after the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Friday, March 9, and conclude with the 4 p.m. Mass on Saturday, March 10. Confessors will be needed for all 24 hours. Groups such as youth groups, prayer groups, etc., are encouraged to consider signing up for an hour of adoration. More information will be forthcoming soon. Change in marriage prep schedules for 2018
There is a change to the diocesan marriage preparation schedule for 2018. The Pre-Cana scheduled at St. Titus Church in Titusville has been moved from March 11 to March 18. Please make the change on any pre-printed marriage preparation materials. The updated schedule can be viewed at http://www.ErieRCD.org/flo_mps.htm. National Marriage Week resources
Celebrate National Marriage Week Feb. 7-14 by reviewing a marriage enrichment resource from the Family Life Office of the Diocese of Erie. The DIY Marriage Tune-Up web page, www.ErieRCD.org/flo_diymarriagetuneup.htm, offers ways to nurture married life and keep it strong. Couples may do these activities alone or with other married couples. Bulletin announcements also are available. Pre-Lenten retreat
Join single and married adults in a weekend of prayer and community Feb. 9-10 at the St. Thomas More House of Prayer in Cranberry. The Chastity Education Office of the Diocese of Erie is sponsoring this pre-Lenten retreat, titled “Preferring nothing to the Love of Christ,” which will include reflections on each person’s call to holiness by Father Canise McMullen, OSB. There will be opportunities for the sacraments and time for quiet prayer. Accommodations are limited. Celebrate Mardi Gras!
St. Francis Xavier Parish invites everyone to its annual Mardi Gras Night on Feb. 10 beginning at 6 p.m. at the parish hall, 8880 Main St., McKean. The admission cost of $15 includes entry in the cash giveaway, as well as food and beverages. Those attending must be at least 21 years old. Proceeds benefit the Capital Improvement Fund.

Erie parish taking Lenten food orders
Holy Trinity Parish in Erie is accepting pre-orders for potato pancake batter and pierogi for Lent through Feb. 11. Payment is due with orders. See the attached order form and flier for all the details.

Benedictines to share Lenten reflections
The Benedictine Sisters of Erie are hosting Lenten vigils in the chapel at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery, 6101 East Lake Road, Erie. The public is invited to attend each Saturday vigil beginning at 7 p.m. with the following women offering reflections:

Erie parishes host viewings of television program
See the attached flier for details about viewings of the television program, “Joan of Arcadia,” every Wednesday in Lent, beginning Feb. 21, at St. Andrew Parish, W. Sixth and Raspberry streets, Erie. The parishes of St. Andrew, St. Paul and Sacred Heart will host the viewings, along with soup and discussion.

Father–Son Program offered in February
All fathers (or male role models) and their sons, ages 11 to 13, are welcome to attend the Father-Son Program Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. at Our Lady of the Lake Parish social hall, 128 Sunset Drive, Edinboro. The Chastity Education Office of the Diocese of Erie is sponsoring the annual event, which includes activities centered on such topics as adolescence, growing into manhood, communication, and listening to God’s call. Erie’s Best Coffee fundraiser to benefit St. Martin Center, Inc.
St. Martin Center, Inc. will host Erie’s Best Coffee fundraiser Feb. 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Bel-Aire Clarion Hotel & Conference Center, 2800 W. Eighth St., Erie. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door (kids ages 12 and under are free). Tickets can be purchased at the Erie Federal Credit Union, 3503 Peach St., Erie, or online at www.stmartincenter.org under the “What’s New” headline. Many coffee shops will provide samples and treats. Those who attend may vote for their choice of Erie’s best coffee. Members of a celebrity panel, including Father Christopher Singer, chancellor, also will cast their votes.

Full-time multi-media journalist needed
The Communications Office of the Diocese of Erie seeks to hire a multi-media journalist to handle its digital presence. The person in this newly created position will work on platforms ranging from Facebook and Twitter to Instagram. Ability to cover news events and write features for online and print. Significant involvement with diocesan website, www.ErieRCD.org, which will relaunch this spring. Also responsible for writing, producing and editing weekly video stories prepared for social media. May have on-camera presence, if appropriate. The candidate will demonstrate strong communications skills and ability to interact with many diocesan departments. Some evening and weekend assignments, and some travel within the 13 counties of northwest Pennsylvania required. Part-time parish office manager needed
Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Edinboro is accepting applications for a part-time parish office manager. Qualifications include:

  • At least three years of previous office management experience, which includes, but is not limited to, basic knowledge of accounting/bookkeeping, experience using QuickBooks, Microsoft Office (including Publisher), maintaining a database, posting payroll, records management, and accounts payable/receivable
  • Candidates must be outgoing and friendly, well organized, able to work without supervision, and must be open to and supportive of the Catholic Church and her teachings and all that life and ministry in a Catholic parish entails.

Employees of Our Lady of the Lake must be able to obtain the proper clearances as described by the Diocesan Policy on the Protection of Children.
