Misión de Armistad or Mission of Friendship began in 1971 when Archbishop Manuiel Ruiz Castro, Archbishop of Yucatán, and Bishop Alfred M. Watson, Bishop of Erie, established a cooperative relationship between the two dioceses.
Centered in Christ, Mission of Friendship provides lay and religious volunteers with an opportunity to form Christian community, to grow in faith and love with the people of Yucatan, and to share their gifts and talents with those in need. Mission of Friendship provides opportunities for cultural exchange between the Archdiocese of Yucatan and the Diocese of Erie. Mission of Friendship coordinates and provides volunteer staff for a variety of projects that serve the poor.
Mission of Friendship programs:
Mobile and permanent clinics: The mobile clinic visits outlying villages and a permanent clinic is located in the poor neighborhood of Tecoh. These provide inexpensive doctor's exams, medicines, prenatal care, well baby checks, a milk and vitamin program, training of village health workers, and instruction in first aid, hygiene and nutrition. |
Little Friends Day Care Center: This center provides care for about 35 children ranging in age from 6 weeks to school age whose mothers must work to support their family. |
New Life Shelter for Girls: Girls whose family situation is inadequate live in group homes receiving schooling, supervision and loving care.
Child and family sponsorship: Sponsors are linked with a needy child or family from Yucatán. The sponsor helps provide the child or family with education, food, clothing, medical care and improved housing.
Tutoring programs: These programs promote learning and literacy among impoverished school aged children by providing reading materials, health education, English classes and enrichment activities.
Sister parish program: This program encourages an exchange between a parish in Yucatán and one in the Erie Diocese. A variety of projects, open to the creativity of the participating parishes, enables each community to share spiritually, culturally and economically.

Refuge for disabled: Mission volunteers assist with nursing, physical therapy and general care at a home for the elderly and others with disabilities.
