In Lent of 2006, the Diocese of Erie embarked on a spiritual journey called Why Catholic? focusing on the four books of the Catholic Catechism of the Catholic Church. One book is studied per year over a four year process. About 50 parishes from around the diocese are participating in this effort.
Why Catholic? is experienced in a number of ways:
-
Small group communities gather for six weeks in Lent and six weeks in the Fall to reflect on a book of the catechism. In 2007, the focus was on Liturgy and Sacraments. The material presents information from the catechism and Scripture and the participants attempt to apply it to their own lives.
- In between sessions, Faith Formation Workshops are held throughout the diocese. These give deeper insight into the topic for the year.
- In December, there are area retreats offered for all parishioners of all parishes engaged in Why Catholic? These again focus on the topic for the year.
- In January, facilitator workshops are held for all those leading the small groups. These help the leaders become familiar with the topic for the year and offer some concrete help in facilitating faith-sharing groups. Cost can be negotiated.
