Show your solidarity with pro-life marchers
If you can’t physically attend the March for Life event in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 24, plan to join in solidarity by attending a pro-life event at St. George Church, 5145 Peach St., Erie. The schedule on Jan. 24 includes 8 a.m. Mass, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and then recitation of the rosary. At 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., there will be half-hour programs shown in the rectory meeting room, and live coverage on EWTN of the 2020 March for Life from 1 to 3 p.m. The movie “Unplanned” will be shown in the meeting room at 10 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Notes on the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas Day) and the blessing of throats (Memorial of St. Blaise) in Ordinary Time are available in the attached liturgical reminders.

2020 Catholic Foundation grant opportunities
The Catholic Foundation of Northwest Pennsylvania has three grant cycles in 2020 for Catholic parishes, Catholic schools, and departments of the Diocese of Erie to apply for grant funding for projects that meet funding criteria. The cycles include the following:

  • Faith formation grant applications will be accepted through Feb. 28
  • Education grant applications will be accepted through March 23, and from Aug. 15 to Sept. 26.

CRS Rice Bowl now accepting orders for Lent 2020
Orders for Catholic Relief Services’ (CRS) annual Rice Bowl program for Lent 2020 are now being accepted. CRS is in the process of updating its order information. If you wish to receive Rice Bowl materials for Lent 2020, you must place an order online by going to https://www.crsricebowl.org/ and clicking “order materials” or by calling 1-800-222-0025. If your order is not placed, either online or by phone, you will not receive Rice Bowl materials for Lent 2020. Materials are available in both English and Spanish. Questions can be directed to Patrice Swick, director of the Social Justice and Life Office, at pswick@ErieRCD.org.

The Office of Communications has received its shipment of the 2020 Diocese of Erie Directory and is preparing a bulk mailing to those who already have ordered a copy. Join Sharpsville parish for homemade spaghetti dinner
The Holy Name Society of St. Bartholomew Parish in Sharpsville will host a homemade spaghetti dinner at the parish social center, 311 W. Ridge Ave., Sharpsville, Jan. 26 from noon to 4 p.m. All are welcome. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Take-outs are available. There also will be a 50/50, gift auction, side raffles and a bake sale. Purchase tickets by contacting the parish office at 724-962-7130 or at https://saintbartholomews.weshareonline.org/. Proceeds benefit the St. Bartholomew Parish Preservation Fund.

Holy Rosary/St. John parishes to host Souper Chili Sunday
The parishes of Holy Rosary and St. John the Baptist in Erie will host a soup and chili cook-off Jan. 26 from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hastings Hall, 2701 East Ave., Erie. Enjoy some great food to benefit parish activities and Holy Rosary’s and St. John’s sister parish in Mexico. For information, to purchase tickets or to enter the competition, contact the parish office at 814-456-4254 or Mary Hickin at 814-920-7525. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for kids 4 to 12. Children 3 and under are free and there will be lots of macaroni and cheese for them! There is a $20 maximum cost for families.

Deadline approaching to enter cheerleading competition
The deadline is Feb. 1 to enter next month’s 11th annual St. Michael Cheerleading Competition at Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage. For all the details, see the cheerleading attachment.

Attend Outdoor Adventures event to benefit L’Arche
L’Arche Erie will host its annual Outdoor Adventures Raffle on Feb. 15 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Bayfront Convention Center in Erie. Pre-sale ticket prices are $20 each, or two for $30 (pre-sale ends Feb. 13). Tickets at the door are $20 each. Save the date for Lenten concert and mission
Jeanne Cotter, a liturgical composer, author and retreat leader, will give a Lenten concert and mission at Notre Dame Church, 2325 Highland Road, Hermitage, March 15-17. She will speak and perform at all weekend Masses. There will be a dinner March 15 at 5:30 p.m., followed by a concert at 7 p.m. featuring Notre Dame's children and adult choirs. Mission evenings will be held at 7 p.m. March 16 and March 17. Cost for the dinner and concert is $20. For special dinner/concert family rates, contact Gretchen Wagner at 724-813-5245.
