Lenten regulations available
Please see the attached document for Lenten regulations in 2019. Details on fasting and abstinence and special days during Lent are included, along with the time for the beginning of the Easter Vigil this year.

February liturgical reminders
Notes on the Presentation of the Lord (Candlemas Day) and the blessing of throats on the fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time are available in the attached liturgical reminders.

2019 diocesan directories have arrived
The Office of Communications has received its shipment of the 2019 Diocese of Erie Directory and is preparing a bulk mailing to those who already have ordered a copy. 2019 Catholic Services Appeal update
The CSA allows the Diocese of Erie to continue its important mission through our parishes and communities. The theme for this year’s CSA is, “Forward Together …with truth …with hope …with Christ.”

The CSA Promotion Weekend is Feb. 23-24 and CSA Commitment Sunday is March 3. Some pastors have requested flexibility with respect to the date that is used as Commitment Sunday in their parish. The specific date on CSA promotional materials has been intentionally left off this year. Pastors are asked to hold Commitment Sunday in their parish no later than March 3.

National Marriage Week is Feb. 7-14
Please join the Family Life Office of the Diocese of Erie in its commitment to the sacrament of marriage by encouraging couples to celebrate National Marriage Week Feb. 7-14. Erie Catholic School System kicks off ‘Week of Giving’
The Erie Catholic School System, consisting of six Catholic elementary schools in Erie, is celebrating Catholic Schools Week with a “Week of Giving.” All gifts made to the system online or at one of the schools will be matched dollar for dollar. Please consider making a gift to ensure that Catholic education remains affordable for all families and that every child maximizes his or her academic and spiritual potential. Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 become a security risk in 2020
Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 will become vulnerable to security risks after Jan. 14, 2020. It is essential to replace Windows 7, Server 2008 and Server 2008 R2 devices before that date to remain protected against the hundreds of thousands of malware threats that are released every day. Unpatched systems are vulnerable. Do not put your parishioners’ personal information at risk by exposing it to hackers who take advantage of outdated or unpatched systems.

Windows XP went end-of-life in 2014 and Vista in 2017. Microsoft Office 2010 goes end-of-life on Oct. 13, 2020. Visit https://www.lifewire.com/what-version-of-windows-do-i-have-2624927 to determine which version of Windows is installed on your devices. Otherwise, use this quick command method: 1) Hold down the Windows logo button (looks like a window pane) on your keyboard and press the letter “r.” The “run” window will open. 2) Type “winver” without the quotes and press enter. Erie Catholic School System to host open houses
The Erie Catholic School System will hold open houses at each of its schools (Blessed Sacrament, Our Lady of Peace, St. James, St. Jude, St. George and St. Luke) on Jan. 27. Please see the attached document that provides the times for each school.

Sharpsville parish to host spaghetti dinner event
The St. Bartholomew Parish Holy Name Society is holding its annual spaghetti dinner Jan. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. at the church social center, 311 W. Ridge Ave., Sharpsville. All are invited. Young adults welcomed to Theology on Tap
Young adults, ages 21 to mid-30s, are invited to attend a series of Theology on Tap events sponsored by the St. George Parish Catholic Young Adult Ministry. The remaining programs this winter will be held Jan. 28, Feb. 11 and Feb. 25, each evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m.at Brewerie (Union Station) in Erie. See the attached flier for more information.

St. John Vianney relic to be venerated in Altoona-Johnstown Diocese
The Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown has been selected to participate in the St. John Vianney Relic Pilgrimage. The relic of St. John Vianney — his entire incorrupt heart — will be at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona on Jan. 31. Mass, breakfast scheduled to honor seminarians
Knights of Columbus Council #4121 of St. Julia Parish, Erie, will host a breakfast to honor seminarians of the Diocese of Erie on Feb. 3 following the 9 a.m. Mass at St. Mark Catholic Center’s chapel, 429 E. Save the date for St. Jude’s purse bingo event
The St. Jude the Apostle Parish PTO will hold a purse bingo event Feb. 24 to benefit the faculty, staff, students and programs at the west Erie school. The event will be held at the Saga Club of Erie, 3828 Washington Ave., Erie. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and games begin at 1 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door (if seating is available). Only 250 tickets are available. See the attachment for more details.

Prince of Peace Center to hold bowl-a-thon
The Prince of Peace Center in Farrell will host its annual bowl-a-thon fundraiser, “Strike Out Poverty,” on Feb. 24 beginning at 12:30 p.m. at Thornton Hall Bowling Lanes, 1208 Hall Ave., Sharon. Teams of up to five bowlers and individuals are invited to register for the event by Feb. 1 to guarantee a free T-shirt and a chance at various prizes. The cost is $30 per person, which includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, T-shirt, raffle ticket, and food, drink and snack tickets. Area churches are invited to field at least one team to take part in the bowl-a-thon competition.

St. Patrick School to celebrate 125 years
Plan now to attend St. Patrick School’s 125th anniversary celebration March 9 at Dion Auditorium, 952 Buffalo St., Franklin. You won’t want to miss this evening of fun, including entertainment provided by Seamus, a live classic rock and Irish band. See the attachment for more details.

Plan now for the 1:38 Women’s Conference
The fifth annual 1:38 Women’s Conference will be held March 30 at Our Lady of Peace Church in Erie. Come and learn how to live joyfully. The conference features three speakers: Amanda Vernon, internationally known recording artist; Beth Davis, director of ministry advancement at Blessed is She; and Sonja Corbitt, author, speaker and broadcaster. The cost for the day is $40 for adults, $35 for senior citizens, $25 for college students, $10 for high school students, and free for religious sisters. The conference cost includes lunch.
