The ethical reception of COVID-19 vaccines
As various vaccines for COVID-19 are made available to the public, concerns about safety and efficacy — as well as the ethics of their research and development — challenge all to make informed choices. Bishop Lawrence Persico has issued a statement that provides information about the vaccines and a process of ethical decision-making consistent with Catholic values. The statement, which can be found at www.eriercd.org/news/News-releases.html, also includes links to several helpful Vatican and USCCB documents.
2021 Help Spread the Faith Collection
Pastors and administrators will find attached Bishop Lawrence Persico’s letter introducing the 2021 Help Spread the Faith Collection to support Catholic communications. It will be taken the weekend of Jan. 24. Parishes are asked to publicize this collection in a significant way on the weekend of Jan. 17.
Guidelines for Sunday of the Word of God
Pastors will find attached some guidelines and suggestions to celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, known as Sunday of the Word of God, which falls on Jan. 24. According to Pope Francis’ 2019 apostolic letter, Aperuit illis, the day should be devoted to the “celebration, study and dissemination of the Word of God,” and celebrated “with a certain solemnity.”
