Lent is one of the Catholic Church’s penitential seasons, marked by prayer, fasting and almsgiving as the faithful prepare for the Resurrection of Christ. It begins on Ash Wednesday and continues through Holy Thursday, concluding with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper. The season includes six Sundays, with the final one, Passion (Palm) Sunday, ushering in Holy Week. The observance of Lent dates back to at least the fourth century and was shaped by the Council of Trent, with its 40-day length reflecting the time Christ spent fasting and praying in the desert (Matthew 4:1–11).
