Canon law refresher course on marriage, annulment

This course is being offered in three different areas of the diocese in July. See the attachment for full details.

Religious Freedom Week June 22-29, 2018
We are called to follow Christ as missionary disciples by serving others and living our faith in all that we do. Religious Freedom Week is June 22-29. This year’s message is “Serving Others in God’s Love” and follows a model of prayer, reflection and action on religious liberty, both in this country and abroad. The following resources are provided on the webpage of the Office of Social Justice and Life (https://www.ErieRCD.org/socialjusticelife/ReligiousFreedomWeek.html), courtesy of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB):
  • a bulletin insert
  • daily reflections on which to pray, reflect and act
  • homily helps for June 24, the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and July 1, the Sunday before Independence Day.

Please consider promoting Religious Freedom Week in your parish and follow the Social Justice and Life Office on Instagram at @eriercd.sjl and on Twitter at @ERIERCDsjl for daily postings during Religious Freedom Week. For more information, contact Patrice Swick, director of the Social Justice and Life Office, at 814-824-1254 or at pswick@ErieRCD.org. A flier of Religious Freedom Week is attached.

Diocesan-sponsored priest retreats
Mark your calendars for upcoming diocesan-sponsored priest retreats:

  • Aug. 6-10, Christ the King Seminary, East Aurora, N.Y., with Father Albert Haase, OFM
  • Sept. 17-21, Villa Maria Spirituality and Educational Center, Villa Maria, Pa., with Bishop Gerald F. Kicanas.

Registration information will be available soon. Questions? Contact Father Justin Pino at frjustin@comcast.net or at 814-772-3135.

Be cautious of gift card scam
Scam artists posing as parish priests are sending email requests to parishioners and parish volunteers to purchase gift cards. Should you receive an unsolicited request to purchase gift cards or other items, exercise extreme caution. Contact the person or entity by using official contact information only. Do not use contact information in the potential fraudulent request. In this age when personal data can be misused by scam artists, please be aware that the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie, clergy, and entities such as parishes and schools will never solicit your personal or business information by any method unless initiated by you.

Update to PDS instructions
You can save money by pre-sorting large mailings of more than 200 pieces. To take advantage of pre-sort rates, a mailing list must be CASS certified. The diocese’s CASS certifies the Faith magazine mailing list, which is comprised of the names and addresses that parishes send to the diocese through the sync each month. Because of this, a CASS certificate can be available for your parish mailings, provided your list meets all three of the following criteria:

  • You are using PDS to create your mailing list
  • You accept ALL address changes from the diocese during the sync. (To dispute any address change, contact Brenda Williams at 814-824-1161 or bwilliams@ErieRCD.org).
  • EVERY parishioner included in your pre-sorted mailing has the “Sync with Diocese” option selected. (The easiest way to accomplish this is to sync your entire PDS database.)

For your convenience, the latest CASS certificate has been placed on the Diocese of Erie’s website at www.ErieRCD.org. Click on the MyDioErie portal icon at the bottom of the page; PDS instructions can be found in the Parish Staff section. Remember that you will need this certificate to qualify for reduced postage when pre-sorting your mailing.

Reminder: FOCCUS training on June 29
FOCCUS training is a requirement for all those who facilitate marriage preparation in the Diocese of Erie. Father Johnathan Schmolt, a certified FOCCUS trainer, will offer training June 29 from 9 a.m.to 4 p.m. at St. Michael Church in Emlenton. Lunch will be provided. There is no cost. Clergy and others interested in FOCCUS training are reminded to sign up with the Family Life Office at 814-824-1265 by June 15. See the attachment for details.
