Do you give weak directions to your child? “Pick up your toys please” or “No more TV right now” and then go on with whatever task you were busy about. Sometimes the child may comply but often parents don’t follow through, and the child learns that if they ignore the request, the parent won’t do anything, and they will get their way. You don’t have to be mean – just firm and take the energy to enforce what you ask. Don’t tell them it’s time to go to bed if you’re not prepared to follow through with calmly carrying them if necessary.
