Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion: Formation, Delegation and Ongoing Renewal
Pastors have a particular responsibility to ensure that those who serve as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are properly formed, prepared and commissioned for this important ministry. Before being presented for service, candidates should receive formation that includes the Church’s teaching on the Eucharist, the reverent handling of the Blessed Sacrament and the practical norms governing the distribution of Holy Communion. The Office for Divine Worship provides resources, guidance and assistance to parishes in developing and renewing formation programs for Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion.
Pastors are also reminded that service as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion requires delegation from the Bishop. This delegation is granted for a period of three years and must be renewed at the conclusion of that term if the individual is to continue serving in this ministry. Regular review of parish rosters and formation programs helps ensure that all ministers are properly delegated and prepared for their responsibilities.
