During the month of November, the Diocese of Erie joins Catholics across the United States in observing Black Catholic History Month. This is a sacred time to remember and celebrate the faith, resilience and contributions of Black Catholics throughout history.

From the first baptized African in St. Augustine in 1565 to the countless men and women who have carried the light of Christ through generations, Black Catholics have shaped the church in powerful ways. Their witness reminds us that the Gospel is for all peoples, in every land, and in every time.

“The joy of the Gospel is for all people: no one can be excluded.”
— Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, no. 23
