The third week of Lent:
Sunday, March 3 through Saturday, March 9, 2024

As you enter into this week, remember: Everything is a gift. Father Mike Schmitz offers an inspiring six-minute reflection to get us off to a good start: The Cure for Entitlement

Why not offer a daily Chaplet of Thanksgiving? This is a useful practice whether on your own or with a family member or friend…in person or using technology. Here are some ideas to help you get started.

Pray a Thanksgiving rosary along with the youth group in St. Marys.

Try the prayer used by Blessed Mary Angela, blessed foundress of the Felician Sisters: Chaplet of Thanksgiving

Watch the short video by Heather of A Catholic Mom’s Life on how to pray a gratitude rosary. As she notes, it does not take the place of a regular rosary, but it is another tool that will surely inspire many.

As you know, fasting doesn’t always have to be about food. One way to combat entitlement and grow in gratitude is by giving up your place. This can mean your favorite seat at the table or in the car, it can mean waiting for others to serve themselves first, or not always selecting the easiest chore/assignment. If you make the commitment to do this, you’ll find many occasions present themselves. How about that driver who is racing you to a parking spot? Does the dog need to go out? Jump up and take care of it before others do so. The possibilities and opportunities are literally endless.

Giving doesn’t always have to come from the wallet. It can be from heart to heart. This week, make a point to recognize the people around you as the gifts they are by offering them a word of appreciation. Try to stay away from the basic “thank you” and be specific. Comments such as, “I love how you always help with the kids,” or “I love how you work hard on your homework even when it is tough tonight. You are such a hard worker,” have a significant impact on those who receive them.
