A Tradition of Faith and Fellowship: St. Mark Seminary Card Party Continues Its Legacy

For generations, the St. Mark Seminary Card Party has brought together the faithful of the Diocese of Erie in support of those preparing for the priesthood. What began decades ago as a simple social gathering organized by the St. Mark Seminary Auxiliary has grown into one of the diocese’s most enduring traditions—rooted in faith, fellowship and a shared commitment to vocations.

Established nearly 80 years ago, the Auxiliary has long supported seminarians through prayer, encouragement and practical assistance. In its early years, members sought simple, meaningful ways to stay connected to the seminarians and provide for their needs. The Card Party emerged from that desire—a modest event centered on cards, conversation and community. Over time, it evolved into the Auxiliary’s primary fundraiser and a cornerstone of its mission.

As the seminary and the Diocese of Erie continued to grow, so did the Card Party. What was once a smaller gathering gradually expanded into a large-scale annual event, drawing participants from across the region. While its format has changed through the years, its purpose has remained constant: to ensure that those discerning a call to the priesthood are supported not only in prayer, but in the practical realities of their formation.

Held this year on April 30 at St. Mark Catholic Center, the event welcomed approximately 400 attendees for an evening centered on connection and generosity. Today, the Card Party includes a basket raffle, silent auction and shared meal, alongside its traditional games—an event that reflects both its history and its growth.

What continues to set the Card Party apart is the presence of the seminarians themselves. Throughout the evening, they greet guests, serve meals, assist with raffles and spend time in conversation with those who have come to support them—offering a meaningful opportunity to encounter the future priests of the Church.

“This is more than an event—it’s an opportunity for people to meet our seminarians and see the joy and commitment with which they are discerning their call,” said Father Scott Jabo. “That personal connection makes a lasting impact and helps build a culture that supports vocations.”

For many involved, that connection is deeply personal.

“My brother was in the seminary when I first became part of the Auxiliary,” said Katy Gregory, who served as this year’s Card Party chair. “Over time, I’ve gotten to know so many of the men and walk with them through their discernment. It’s meaningful to be part of that journey and to see where God leads them.”

The event is made possible through the work of dozens of volunteers and the generosity of the wider community.

“It’s a group of people who truly care about vocations,” said Kathy Holland. “It doesn’t take a lot of time to be involved, but what you’re doing matters. Supporting these men—whether through prayer, encouragement or events like this—is something that stays with them well beyond the seminary.”

Funds raised through the Card Party directly support seminarians in their formation, helping to provide for personal needs, educational resources and experiences that enrich their preparation for ministry.

Today, the St. Mark Seminary Card Party stands as more than a fundraiser. It is a visible expression of a community walking alongside its seminarians—offering encouragement, connection and support at every stage of their journey.
