Parents would chaperone the students for a day of touring the monastery, its grounds and its ministries. The visit included joining the sisters for midday prayer and a lunch of hot dogs, chips and ice cream in the monastery dining room.      He sees this approach not only as a guide for personal peace but as a path to a more faithful church. "My hope," Father Gallina said, "is that people strive each day to live their best life by following God and the Commandments, and by truly loving their neighbor."
A native of St. Bernard Parish in Bradford, Father Gallina first felt the call to priesthood while attending Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie. He was ordained on May 27, 1965.
He served as pastor at St. Theresa in Shinglehouse (1981–1987), St. Boniface in Erie (1987–1999) and St. Bernard in Bradford (1999–2011) and as parochial vicar at several other parishes. He also spent five years teaching at Cathedral Prep.
Now retired, Father Gallina lives at the Bishop Michael J. Murphy Retirement Residence for Priests in Erie. He continues to celebrate weekend Masses at Our Lady of Mercy in Harborcreek and assists at other parishes as needed.
Known for his homilies focused on gratitude and hope, Father Gallina encourages others: “Take time to pray, read Scripture and be with positive people who inspire you.”

Sister Charles Marie Holze, OSB

Sister Charles Marie has dedicated many years to cultivating beauty and treating “all tools and goods of the monastery as sacred vessels of the altar,” as St. Benedict instructs in his Rule. She entered the Benedictine Sisters of Holy Family Priory in Benet Lake, Wis., in 1973 and made her final monastic profession in 1980.
Sister Charles Marie served in several ministries at Holy Family Priory, including overall maintenance and landscaping, and at Our Faith Press, a publisher of Catholic pamphlets that was a ministry of the monks at nearby St. Benedict’s Abbey in Benet Lake. She served on the monastic council and as sacristan at Holy Family.
In 1986, the sisters of Holy Family Priory began a merger process with the Benedictine Sisters of Erie, and the sisters gradually relocated to Erie. Sister Charles Marie moved to the Mount in November 1989. After a few months at Benet Press, the community’s former printing ministry, Sister Charles Marie began working at the Glinodo Center, where she was in charge of maintenance, housekeeping and groundskeeping from 1990 until 1998. She was named director of physical resources for the monastery in 1998, a position that included overseeing the team that managed and cared for all community properties. She served in that position for twenty-four years until 2022, the well-maintained buildings and beautiful grounds continue to reflect her loving care and attention to detail.

From the earliest days of his vocation, he has been committed to stewardship principles—time, talent and treasure—and has dedicated his ministry to encouraging clergy and laity to live out these values.
His early assignments included serving as parochial vicar at St. Mark the Evangelist Parish in Lawrence Park and assistant chancellor for the Diocese of Erie. He was also a weekend assistant at St. Paul Parish and chaplain at Saint Vincent Hospital, both in Erie.
In 1983, he was appointed parochial vicar at Notre Dame Parish in Hermitage. In 1987, he became pastor of Mount Calvary Parish in Erie, where he served for 12 years. He served three, six-year terms as pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Erie.
In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Msgr. Magraw has served the diocese in various roles, including as a member of the Presbyteral Council and the Bishop’s College of Consultors. Since 2011, he has acted as a delegate for matrimonial dispensations for the Diocesan Office of Matrimonial Concerns and the Tribunal.
His commitment to stewardship is evident in his leadership of the annual Good Shepherd Collection, which supports the care of retired diocesan priests. Under his guidance, the collection has raised over $1 million in the past five years. His deep respect for senior clergy is also reflected in his personal life, as he shares his rectory with several retired priests.
Monsignor Magraw’s vocation was inspired by the example of priests and the Sisters of St. Joseph at his home parish and a memorable visit from a missionary priest during his school years. He entered St. Mark Seminary in Erie as a high school sophomore. He continued his formation at St. Mary’s College and Seminary in Kentucky and Christ the King Seminary in New York.
Throughout his nearly five decades of ministry, Monsignor Magraw has remained devoted to the Eucharist and the priesthood, drawing daily inspiration from the sacred words of the Mass and the call to serve God’s people.

Father Brandon Feikles

Father Brandon Feikles is a graduate of Cathedral Preparatory School in Erie, Class of 2013. It was during his late teenage years, at age 18, that he attended a Divine Mercy Encounter retreat—an experience that proved to be a defining moment in his journey toward the priesthood. That time of reflection and spiritual awakening helped deepen his sense of vocation and set him firmly on the path of service to the church.
After high school, Father Feikles went on to study at Gannon University in Erie while in seminary formation for the Diocese of Erie. He earned his degree in 2017, continuing to discern and grow in his calling. From 2021 to 2022, he spent time in Capuchin formation at the Padre Pio Friary in Frankford which further enriched his understanding of religious life and strengthened his commitment to priestly ministry.
Father Feikles’s home parish is St. James in Erie, where his vocation was encouraged by a faithful and supportive community. After ordination in May, he served the people of St. Tobias Parish in Brockway, where he brought a spirit of prayerfulness, compassion and joyful dedication to his ministry.
Father Feikles began a new assignment this past August as parochial vicar of St. George Parish in Erie. In addition to his parish responsibilities, he also celebrates Masses at The Pennsylvania State University, Behrend Campus. He looks forward to accompanying both parishioners and students in their walk with Christ.
Father Feikles finds joy in praying the Rosary and seeks to share the message of God’s love with everyone he encounters. His ministry is marked by warmth, sincerity and a deep desire to serve the people of God with faith and humility.

DEACON ANNIVERSARIES

The following deacons are celebrating anniversaries of their ordinations to the permanent diaconate in the Diocese of Erie.

15 YEARS

Deacon Richard Brogdon

A native of McKean, Deacon Richard Brogdon grew up on a farm and began his education in a one-room schoolhouse. After high school, he served in the United States Marine Corps and later studied at Gannon and Edinboro Universities through the G.I. Bill. He worked at GE in Erie for 28 years, retiring in 2000, while also managing rental properties in the city. For him, these were more than business ventures; they became opportunities for ministry, offering compassion and counsel to tenants in need.
Raised in another tradition, Deacon Brogdon entered the Catholic Church in 1976 under the guidance of Father Wally Packard at St. George Parish, Erie. He became active in parish life, served on parish council, helped with CCD and the summer festival and later became deeply involved in Cursillo, serving in leadership roles including rector and president. In 1994, he and his wife, Victoria, joined St. Jude the Apostle Parish, where Monsignor Bob Brugger encouraged him to pursue the diaconate.
Ordained in 2000, Deacon Brogdon’s ministry has included refugee resettlement with Catholic Charities, pastoral care at St. Vincent Hospital and leadership during a transition at Catholic Charities Counseling and Adoption Services. He currently serves as chairman of the Diocesan Deacon Council and remains active at St. Jude Parish, the Emmaus Committee and in pastoral care at AHN St. Vincent.
He and Victoria have been married for 28 years and are blessed with three children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Congratulatory messages

15 YEARS

Deacon Douglas Konzel

Deacon Doug Konzel was raised in the Ruthenian Byzantine Catholic tradition. He grew up learning and appreciating both the Eastern and Latin rites. This experience gave him a deep understanding of the richness and diversity of Catholic spirituality. His journey of faith eventually led him to the Latin Rite, where his vocation to the diaconate would take root.
He and his wife, Cheryl, have been married for 31 years and together they have been blessed with four children and fourteen grandchildren. Family life has always been central to Deacon Konzel’s ministry, grounding him in humility, service and love.
The call to the diaconate came through the quiet yet persistent prompting of the Holy Spirit, particularly through the words and encouragement of Monsignor William Biebel. That encouragement sparked a deeper discernment and led him to say “yes” to God’s call to a life of service as a permanent deacon.
Among the many places he has served, his time at St. Joseph/Bread of Life Community Parish under Father Larry Richards’s guidance left the most profound impression. There, Deacon Konzel learned essential lessons in humility and became acutely aware of his own emotional struggles – insights that profoundly shaped his personal and diaconal life.
Reflecting on his life and ministry, Deacon Konzel offers this simple but powerful encouragement: “With all your heart, mind, soul, strength and in all things, seek the Truth – seek God.” That pursuit of Truth has been the foundation of his vocation and continues to guide his service to the church and others.

Congratulatory messages

Thank you for your service to St. John the Baptist/Holy Rosary/Holy Trinity Parish. Many blessings to you as you celebrate your jubilee!

15 YEARS

Deacon Richard O'Polka

Ordained to the permanent diaconate in 2010, Deacon Richard O’Polka has faithfully served the Diocese of Erie through a ministry marked by dedication, compassion and a deep commitment to both parish and community life. A longtime parishioner of St. Patrick Parish in Franklin, he has taken on multiple leadership roles there, including diaconal assistant, temporal administrator and pastoral coordinator. His involvement in faith formation as a religious education instructor and confirmation program volunteer reflects his belief in nurturing the spiritual lives of others through consistent, personal witness.
A graduate of Gannon University in Erie, Deacon O’Polka has also brought his professional experience to bear in service to the wider church and nonprofit community. He has contributed his time and expertise as a board member, investment advisor and treasurer for organizations including Galaxy Federal Credit Union, St. Elizabeth Center in Oil City, Venango Region Catholic School System, Better Housing for Erie, Venango Catholic High School and Catholic Charities Counseling & Adoption Services in Erie.
In 2022, Deacon O’Polka and his wife, Tammy, were recognized by Catholic Charities as Helping Hands award recipients for their years of outreach to those affected by homelessness, poverty and illness in the diocese. That honor underscored his unwavering commitment to living out the corporal works of mercy in tangible, meaningful ways.
At the heart of Deacon O’Polka’s ministry is a quiet, steady presence—a willingness to accompany others in their faith journey, whether through parish leadership, charitable outreach or everyday acts of service.

15 YEARS

Deacon Dennis Socash

Born, raised and still living in Winburne, Deacon Dennis J. Socash has dedicated his life to faith, family and service. A 1974 West Branch High School graduate, he spent 35 years working in the domestic relations section of family law for Clearfield County Government before retiring. His lifelong commitment to the church began as a young altar server and continued through decades of ministry as a lector, eucharistic minister, religious education teacher and retreat facilitator.
Deacon Socash’s journey of discernment was deeply personal. While considering the priesthood, he remained home as his father’s caregiver. In a moment of divine clarity, he met CarolAnne, who quite literally came to his back door. The couple married in 1995 and are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. Together, they share three adult children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A pivotal moment came in 2004 when Deacon Socash attended a friend’s ordination and felt a stirring in his heart toward the diaconate. That call led him to embrace a ministry that was a natural extension of his lifelong service. Now assigned as a permanent deacon at St. Agnes Parish in Morrisdale, he continues to serve faithfully assisting at Mass, presiding at baptisms and weddings and offering comfort at funerals.
Through it all, Deacon Socash finds strength in the Holy Spirit and consolation in the simple yet powerful word once shared with him by Bishop Donald Trautman: “Persevere.” His vocation remains rooted in the knowledge that all he does is by God’s grace and to God be the glory.

Congratulations on the 15th anniversary of your ordination as our beloved Deacon. Thank you for what you do, you truly are a blessing! — St. Agnes Parish, Morrisdale

We recognize that many of the parishes, churches and schools where the clergy and women religious we are honoring worked are now partnered or merged, perhaps renamed, or, in some cases, closed. As we share our esteem for the work of those who served, we have chosen to refer to the parishes and schools where they ministered as they were known at the time of service.
