Bishop Mark Eckman installed as 13th Bishop of Pittsburgh
By Kristine Rilling07/15/2025
The Diocese of Pittsburgh celebrated a historic and spirit-filled moment on July 14, 2025, as Bishop Mark A. Eckman was formally installed as the 13th bishop of the diocese. The installation Mass at St. Paul Cathedral brought together bishops, clergy, religious and faithful from across Pennsylvania and beyond.
Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States and representative of Pope Leo XIV, was present for the occasion and read the apostolic mandate from the Holy Father – formally entrusting Bishop Eckman with his new pastoral responsibilities.
Bishop Lawrence Persico of the Diocese of Erie was among those participating in the celebration. “It was a privilege to be present for such a joyful and hope-filled moment in the life of the church,” Bishop Persico said. “Bishop Eckman’s pastoral heart, humility and steady leadership will serve the Diocese of Pittsburgh well in the years ahead.”
Bishop Edward M. Lohse of Kalamazoo, formerly of the Diocese of Erie, was also in attendance at Bishop Eckman’s installation Mass, where he joined fellow bishops in support and prayer for this significant episcopal celebration.
Appointed by Pope Leo XIV in May, Bishop Eckman succeeds Bishop David A. Zubik, who served as bishop of Pittsburgh for 18 years and recently marked 50 years of priesthood. Bishop Eckman brings decades of parish and diocesan experience, having served most recently as auxiliary bishop and vicar general.
In his homily, Bishop Eckman reminded the faithful: “Each and every one of us needs to practice and practice and practice our faith.” He emphasized service, humility and the daily call to love God and neighbor as the heart of Christian discipleship.
The Diocese of Erie offers prayers for Bishop Eckman’s ministry and deep gratitude for Bishop Zubik’s faithful leadership.
