On Monday, September 29, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., the Diocese of Erie will celebrate its second Blue Mass of the year at St. Francis Xavier Church, 8880 Main Street in McKean, Pa. This liturgy, marking the 91st anniversary of the first Blue Mass held in Washington, D.C., continues a cherished national tradition of honoring and praying for the safety of those who serve in public safety and military roles.

The Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Lawrence T. Persico, Bishop of Erie. Concelebrating will be Reverend Scott Jabo, chaplain with the Retired State Police Association of Pennsylvania. Assisting in the liturgy will be Reverend Jason Glover, chaplain for the Erie Police Department and Reverend Philip Pinczewski, chaplain for the Erie Fire Department.

The Blue Mass is a moment of gratitude and remembrance, honoring the daily sacrifices made by law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMS personnel, 911 dispatchers, correctional officers, military service members and veterans. All active and retired public safety personnel and military are encouraged to attend in uniform.

Prior to Mass, a piper will perform traditional military hymns, setting a tone of reverence and respect. A reception with hors d’oeuvres will follow the liturgy, providing a space for fellowship and community appreciation.

“The Blue Mass is a sacred moment of gratitude,” said Don Benczkowski, longtime organizer of the event. “It’s not just about honoring a profession, it’s about recognizing the men and women who put their lives on the line for us every single day. Whether they serve in the military or in our neighborhoods as first responders, this Mass is our way of saying thank you, of lifting them up in prayer and of showing them they’re never alone. We want any and all community members to attend this mass and show their appreciation for first responders and their families, who sacrifice so much for us.  It’s one night, but it means everything.  Let's show all first responders that we care.”

This is the second Blue Mass celebrated in the Diocese of Erie in 2025. The first took place in Clearfield on May 17 at St. Francis Roman Catholic Church. Now in its fifth year, the Clearfield County Blue Mass featured the SCI Houtzdale Honor Guard and was followed by a dinner hosted by the Blue Mass Committee and supported by the local Knights of Columbus and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

As communities across the nation mark 91 years since the first Blue Mass was held, the Diocese of Erie invites all people of goodwill to join in this meaningful celebration. Together, in prayer and thanksgiving, we honor those who serve, remember those lost and support those who continue to protect and defend.
