Each year, from September 15 to October 15, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich histories, cultures and contributions of our Hispanic brothers and sisters. In the Diocese of Erie, this month holds special significance as we join with our Hispanic family in honoring the beautiful diversity within the Body of Christ.

Our diocesan family includes a vibrant Hispanic community whose faith, traditions and devotion enrich us all. At the heart of this community is St. Stephen of Hungary – Iglesia De San Esteban Parish in Erie, which serves as a spiritual home for many Hispanic Catholics in our region. The parish offers Masses in Spanish, sacramental preparation, religious education and cultural celebrations rooted in Hispanic Catholic tradition. These include special feast days, Marian devotions and family-centered gatherings that reflect a faith passed on through generations.

We invite all the faithful to take this opportunity to learn more about Hispanic culture, attend a Spanish-language Mass, or connect with the ministries that serve our Hispanic community. Whether you speak the language or not, your presence is a sign of unity and welcome.

Our connection to the Hispanic Catholic experience reaches far beyond the borders of our diocese. For over 50 years, the Mission Office of the Diocese of Erie has nurtured a deep and lasting partnership with the people of Yucatán, Mexico, through the Mission of Friendship. This partnership is not just charitable, it is a mutual exchange of love, support and faith that has impacted countless lives.

The Mission of Friendship includes several programs that support children and families in Mérida City and surrounding areas. Through the Amigos sponsorship program, parishioners in our diocese help ensure that children have access to education, healthcare and everyday essentials. Programs like the Nueva Vida after-school program, Los Amiguitos daycare and our growing sister parish relationships continue to be signs of solidarity and shared hope.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we give thanks for this sacred bond between our diocese and the families of Yucatán. These relationships have deepened our understanding of what it means to be one church, united in Christ, across languages, cultures and borders.

We encourage everyone in the Diocese of Erie to take part in this month of celebration, not only by reflecting on the cultural contributions of Hispanic Americans, but by supporting the missions that bring us together as one family in faith.
