The John Mark Gannon Assembly of the Knights of Columbus marked a historic milestone this past weekend, celebrating its 125th Anniversary with a Mass of thanksgiving and a gathering of members, civic leaders and distinguished guests.
The celebration began on Saturday at 4 p.m. with a Mass at St. Ann Church, celebrated by Father Jerry Priscaro. The liturgy brought together members of the Assembly, their families and friends to give thanks for more than a century of service to the church and community. The Knights of Columbus Color Corps, dressed in full regalia, provided a striking presence, underscoring the solemnity and dignity of the occasion.
Following Mass, the celebration continued at the Erie Yacht Club with dinner and music. The event drew members of the Assembly and guests from across the region to honor the legacy of faith, patriotism and unity that has guided the Assembly since its founding in 1899.
Special guests included Pennsylvania Knights of Columbus State Deputy Gary Damich and State Chaplain Father Bud Falkenhan, both of whom joined in extending their congratulations. Local civic leaders also recognized the occasion: proclamations from Erie Mayor Joe Schember and the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, presented by Representatives Bob Merski and Pat Harkins, offered official commendation for the Assembly’s enduring contributions.
The John Mark Gannon Assembly holds a special place in Knights of Columbus history. Recognized as the very first Assembly in the entire Order, it has grown over the decades to become a vibrant body of nearly 375 members today. Its name honors Archbishop John Mark Gannon, one of Erie’s most revered church leaders, who dedicated his ministry to advancing Catholic education, charitable works and the dignity of human life.
Planning for such a milestone celebration required the dedication and teamwork of many. Faithful Navigator Joseph Kubiak, who serves as president of the Assembly, worked closely with a team of volunteers to coordinate the anniversary Mass and reception. Together, they ensured that every detail, from the liturgy to the dinner program, reflected the spirit and history of the Assembly. Their efforts were a clear example of the Knights’ commitment to service and fraternity.
“This anniversary is more than just a milestone,” Kubiak said. “It is a testament to the dedication of generations of Knights who have lived out their faith through service. We are proud of our history, and we are equally committed to carrying that legacy forward.”
As the evening drew to a close at the Erie Yacht Club, with fellowship and music filling the air, there was a clear sense that the spirit of the Knights of Columbus remains as strong today as it was 125 years ago. The Assembly’s members left not only with gratitude for the past, but also with renewed energy for the future, continuing their mission of faith and service to both church and community.
