In a powerful moment of hope and inspiration for the global church, two modern-day witnesses of faith – Blessed Carlo Acutis and Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati – are poised to be canonized saints.
Earlier this year, Pope Francis approved the canonization of the young Italian computer programmer and Eucharistic devotee Carlo Acutis alongside Pier Giorgio Frassati, a layman known for his deep charity, political activism and joyful spirituality.
Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlow Acutis will be canonized on September 7, 2025. The canonization ceremony will take place in St. Peter's Square in Rome and will be presided over by Pope Leo XIV.
Excitement is already growing around the world, especially among young Catholics who see in these men relatable and heroic examples of holiness.
Carlo Acutis, who died of leukemia in 2006 at the age of 15, used his passion for computers to build a website cataloging Eucharistic miracles, leaving behind a legacy that continues to evangelize online. Pier Giorgio Frassati, who died in 1925 at age 24, was known for his mountain hikes, deep prayer life, and tireless service to the poor.
Both lived ordinary lives marked by extraordinary faith.
These two young men show us that sainthood is not reserved for priests or religious. They lived in the world, struggled with modern challenges and still managed to live lives of heroic virtue. Their stories speak powerfully to the church today – especially to young people.
To help the faithful prepare for and participate in this historic event, the Diocese of Erie has launched a resource page..
