May has Mother’s Day and June has Father’s Day. Did you know that the 4th Monday in September (Sept. 28 this year) is Family Day? Relax, there are no gifts to buy or cards to send, simply eat dinner with your family on this day. Maybe you do this regularly anyway. Good. If not, try to do it more often. Some families have each person share a high and a low of the day during dinner.
9/27/2026 Respect Life - Abortion Pills after Dobbs
Use this in your 09/27/2026 bulletin
“While the Dobbs decision gave states the freedom to pass pro-life laws and protect preborn children, these laws are now being undermined by a proliferation of abortion pills. The Food and Drug Administration, a government agency responsible for protecting public health, has enabled a nationwide mail-order abortion industry by allowing abortion pills to be prescribed in telemed appointments and sold both at neighborhood pharmacies and online, circumventing state laws that protect life in the womb. This leaves women vulnerable to suffering an abortion alone at home, without any medical supervision. It also sets up opportunities for further exploitation by their violent partners or human traffickers.”

In today's gospel, Jesus asks, "What is your opinion?" We often mistake our opinions for dogma or fact, but they are merely our perceptions or feelings about a situation. Arguments over opinions can cause significant divides in families. Tread lightly on the opinions of others; the heart you break my be your own.

October is Respect Life Month. As a parent, I assume you speak respectfully to your children and they to you. Respecting life also means valuing all human life and creation – especially the lives of the weak, the vulnerable, the unborn, the poor, even those we disagree with. During this political season of campaigning, no matter how strongly you feel about a candidate or issue, let your children hear you speak respectfully about opponents. Support candidates who speak respectfully and honestly.

There is a lot of noise in our world. Although God may not come into you or your child’s life like the bolt of lightning that struck St. Paul, we often need some quiet to hear the voice of God. TV, cell phones, computer games, and headphones, can crowd out that quiet that lets God be heard. Create some quiet times for your child.

November is designated National Homeless Youth Awareness Month, a critical time to raise awareness about the challenges facing young people experiencing homelessness. Annually approximately 1.2 million children under age 6 and 4.3 million youth and young adults experience homelessness. Youth without stable housing face a high risk of trauma, violence, substance abuse, sex trafficking and mental health issues. Homeless high school students were nearly twice as likely to consider suicide and over three times as likely to attempt it compared to housed students. You can help by supporting local shelters, outreach programs and advocating for policies that protect vulnerable youth. For more resources visit: www.eriercd.org/childprotection/.

Today's gospel highlights Jesus' humanity: like us, He needed RECOGNITION ("You are my Son"), AFFECTION ("My Beloved Son"), and AFFIRMATION ("With you I am well pleased"). In our families, it's easy to focus on irritating behaviors and take the positives for granted. This New Year, take a lesson from God the Father: be an AFFIRMER, not a BLAMER.

Jesus asks in today’s gospel, “What are you looking for?” What do you seek from your spouse, children, or parents? Every family is made up of imperfect people. Expecting perfection is unrealistic; accepting imperfection is wise.

Today’s gospel reminds us that ‘unclean spirits’ still trouble families, taking root in grudges, punishing silence, impatience, and harshness. Jesus gives us the authority to drive them out. Choose forgiveness and reconciliation and become the light you long to see in the darkness.

In today’s gospel, Jesus went to Andrew and Simon’s home to rest, only to find Simon’s mother-in-law seriously ill. We, too, often return home seeking rest and encounter problems instead. Follow Andrew and Simon’s example: tell Jesus about them “immediately.”

Jesus went into the desert to gain perspective on His life. This Lent, take a fresh look at a difficult relationship in your life. Focus on the positive things that person does, not just the negatives. Try to understand why their behaviors bother you. Can you honestly share your feelings with them without attacking them? Make Lent a time to MEND and FORGIVE!

The apostles thought they knew Jesus, but when He was transfigured before them, they were "afraid." In families, we cannot freeze relationships because change and growth are inevitable. Children grow up, parents age, and spouses evolve. Transfigurations are all around us and within us. Relationships can only flourish when we embrace the new and let go of the old.

Today's gospel recounts Jesus chasing the merchants out of the temple. He teaches us to act from conviction, not just anger. Jesus didn't condemn the merchants themselves, only their business practices. Focus on addressing the behavior, not attacking the person.

Today's gospel speaks of light and darkness. Often, parents are deliberately "left in the dark." Darkness can be comforting because it makes no demands on us, while light can be disturbing as it forces us to take action. Parents must walk a delicate balance between "sitting in the dark" and "turning on the lights."

Relationships come with a price. We must be willing to entrust ourselves to another, let go of our autonomy, and surrender our independence. It is through this kind of self-sacrifice that we discover a newer, richer life with others.

The Passion of Jesus makes it clear that no one escapes suffering. While suffering is inevitable, no one should endure it alone. One of the primary roles of families is to stand by and support each other through times of suffering.

That first Easter morning was confusing. Jesus was missing, and Mary Magdalene, Peter, and John "did not know" what to do. In family life, there are similarly confusing moments when "we don't know" what to do. Like the apostles, we are Easter people when we believe in and trust each other, even when all seems lost.

The apostles were afraid of Jesus until He ate with them, and they touched Him. In your family, the ordinary acts of eating together, touching, and embracing not only confirm your love for each other but also celebrate God’s presence. These 'ordinary' moments hold the 'extraordinary.'

Today's gospel serves as a job description for Christian parents. For most people, the most influential shepherd in their lives is a parent. Every parent is called to be a "good shepherd," to "freely lay down their life" for their children, to "love" and "know" their children, and to "lead" them so "they know your voice."

Just as the vine grower in today's gospel prunes and cleanses the branches to ensure they are well-rooted, parents must also guide their children with discipline, set boundaries, and establish goals. These practices are essential for nurturing our children so they can grow and flourish, ultimately bearing fruit in their lives.

Today's gospel challenges us to "love one another as I have loved you." Jesus serves as our model, asking us to "lay down our life"—our time, attention, opinions, and needs—for each other. This sacrificial love is the essence of family, where God becomes visible through our selfless acts of love.

Jesus was concerned for his disciples and turned to prayer. Despite our efforts to "guard and protect" our children, they become less dependent on us each day. We must learn to let go and trust in God. Prayer and parenting go hand in hand.

One gets the impression that there was always a lot of sharing, discussion, and learning during the many meals Jesus and the disciples shared together. Parenting is much like the story of the farmer in today's gospel parable. All growth is the Lord's work, and we have no control over the process. The farmer doesn't even understand it, as the seed grows even when he sleeps. Similarly, as parents, we can influence our children but cannot guarantee the results.

Today's gospel is so familiar, it hurts! The hometown folks couldn't accept the presence of God in Jesus because they had watched him grow up. In today’s gospel “the apostles gathered around and told Jesus all they had done.” Listening allows the other person to express, understand and appreciate their experiences. In today’s gospel, Philip worried about having "enough food" for the crowd. What is enough? When does our "enough" deprive another family of their fair share? Jesus performed today’s miracle because one child was willing to share and risk living with less. Can your family live more simply so that other families can simply live?

"Stop murmuring," Jesus told the disciples in today’s gospel. Complaining is dead-end; constant complaining becomes nagging. While it might make us feel better, it often makes others feel bitter. Silence or grumbling won't resolve the problem. Address differences honestly and respectfully, without making them personal attacks.

In today’s gospel, Jesus warns that "what comes from within can defile" a person. Families need to be concerned not only about "outside influences" but also about "inside influences." Disagreements are common in families. But what if Jesus asked, "What are you arguing about?" Are your disputes trivial and petty? We are meant to serve each other, not control.

The words in today’s gospel, “Whoever gives a cup of water in the name of Christ will not lose their reward,” resonate deeply with us. As parents, we earn our “reward” when we bring a bottle to a crying infant in the middle of the night, offer juice boxes to thirsty five-year-olds, or hold ice chips to the fevered lips of a spouse. These acts are simple yet sacred. In our homes, we give until it hurts, all “in the name of Christ.”
